English version

In the long form of the 108 movements, there are three sections, i.e. three parts that follow one another. This is not noticeable at first glance because the execution seems to be continuous, without interruption.

The first section is considered to represent the EARTH.
The second section is often indicated as representing MAN between heaven and earth, which may seem quite logical. However, the sequence of movements called « the form » does not serve to place man, it would be more accurate to say « the human », in the center between heaven and earth. This is a very materialistic vision of work and in reality, the human being is already between heaven and earth. There is no work to do to get there, from the point of view of matter…

The form and its associated techniques such as « zhan zuang » (浑元站桩), Qi Gong 氣功 and meditation 靜坐 serves to transform the human into someone stronger, healthier and more attuned to themselves and others. I would almost dare to say that taichi transforms the human into a « super-human ».
It is an alchemical process which exists only in the long forms and which consists in taking the raw material: the basic human, who must work the material: his body (the earth) to then work his spirit (the sky) and become an improved being. This is what the masters were talking about when they wrote « man » and this is the last alchemical phase of taichi.

Of course, all this work is infinite, unless you reach « enlightenment » but let’s leave that aside for the moment because it only concerns beings in principle already very advanced. These are the ones who remain very discreet and will probably not come to a taichi class, or any other class for that matter.

Each time you practice the form, you refine the alchemical process that transforms you into a super-human. Each time you practice the form, you are polishing the diamond that you are, letting more and more pure light through and this light does not « fall from the sky ».

So, in taichi, it is not a question of HEAVEN – MAN – EARTH nor of EARTH – MAN – HEAVEN but of transforming the human being by means of : EARTH – HEAVEN – MAN.

This also touches on the eternal debate about the ideal size of the form: is the long form more interesting than the short one? For the alchemical process, yes, but it is possible to reach a very good, even excellent level with a short form. However, I notice that all the masters I have known practice, sometimes without teaching it, at least one long form… Even Grand Master Chen Man Ching who created his famous short form, practiced himself a long form which we can find with Grand Master T.T. Liang, for example.

Rest assured. Whatever your form, if it incorporates the internal principles of taichi, it will allow you to alchemize who you are towards a superior being than the one you were before starting taichi.
